Suggested Dance Attire
What dancers wear should help them feel comfortable, confident, and ready to move. Traditional dancewear can be a wonderful way to take the guesswork out of getting dressed for class, but at GMB, a strict uniform is not required.
Our suggestions are designed to support safe, unrestricted movement while allowing teachers to see alignment and technique. They are intended for all dancers, regardless of gender. Choose the options that work best for you and the style of dance you're taking.
-
Dancers are welcome to wear traditional dancewear, such as a leotard with tights or ankle socks, but it is not required.
Most importantly, dancers should wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely without overheating. Leggings or shorts with a fitted T-shirt are great options.
Please keep accessories to a minimum. Tutus, skirts, jewelry, and other extras can sometimes become distracting or get in the way of movement.
For feet:
Wearing tights or socks? Please wear ballet or jazz slippers.
No tights or socks? Bare feet are perfect!
-
Primary, Junior & Youth Ballet
Dancers are encouraged to wear traditional ballet attire:
A leotard without an attached skirt
Pink tights or tights in a colour that reflects the dancer's natural skin tone, or fitted black shorts
Canvas ballet slippers
A short ballet skirt (wrap or pull-on) is welcome. Dancers may also wear thin ankle socks instead of tights.
Most importantly, clothing should allow dancers to move freely and allow teachers to clearly see alignment and placement. Please avoid rhinestones, large embellishments, or other decorations that may catch on clothing or interfere with movement.
Adult Ballet
Traditional ballet attire is welcome and encouraged, but not required.
Wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move freely and gives your teacher a clear view of alignment and placement. Leggings, fitted shorts, leotards, tights, fitted T-shirts and layers that can be removed as you warm up are all great options.
Ballet slippers are encouraged, but bare feet or socks are also welcome.
-
Junior & Youth Contemporary
Dancers are encouraged to wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows for a full range of movement:
A leotard or fitted T-shirt/top
Black leggings, fitted shorts, or footless tights
Bare feet
Knee pads are optional and can be helpful for floor work.
Warm-up layers such as joggers, sweaters, and leg warmers are welcome. Dancers may be asked to remove these once they are warm so teachers can clearly see alignment and movement.
Primary ConTAPorary
ConTAPorary dancers explore both Tap and Contemporary in each class.
Comfortable, form-fitting dancewear is recommended. Leggings, fitted shorts, leotards, and fitted T-shirts are all great options.
Dancers will need tap shoes for the Tap portion of class and will work in bare feet for Contemporary. Please choose clothing that makes it easy to switch between the two styles.
Adults
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Leggings, shorts, fitted tops, T-shirts, and removable layers are all welcome.
Contemporary is generally danced in bare feet. Socks may also be worn when appropriate.

All dancers should have their hair pulled back and away from their face and eyes. This is important for safe movement and helps dancers focus on their technique. Hair whipping into your eyes during turns is no fun!
